During the 2023-24 school year, my team on LA Blueprint developed a mobile app for WriteGirl, a nonprofit empowering teen writers. As a designer, I collaborated with them to identify key needs and delivered a scalable solution in under a year, including a robust design system and documentation to support long-term sustainability.

What's the Problem?

What's the Problem?

The transition to digital spaces has been challenging for WriteGirl, as writing workshops and mentoring sessions often lose their impact and depth online. However, the organization’s engagement with young people from distant locations like Uganda and Tajikistan—who cannot attend in-person events—emphasizes the need for a more effective and accessible digital solution.

How can we bring the magic of WriteGirl’s creative writing programs to an online audience?

Time to Hear From Real Users

With a clear understanding of what we wanted to achieve and how we planned to do it, it was time to understand who our users were. We conducted user interviews to gather insights into the challenges, processes, and motivations behind their creative writing experiences. Post-interviews, we created an affinity map to categorize the challenges, processes, and motivations shared by users.

Iterating Ideas

As we transitioned to higher fidelity designs, we followed our research, guiding a highly iterative process for each feature and screen. A huge aspect of our design team was our ability to foster an environment where there were no “bad” ideas! This approach encouraged creativity, resulting in innovative ideas from spontaneous team huddles and a playful design process.
