During the 2024 school year, I was reached out to by the project lead to become the design lead for AYSE, an app that connects concert-goers at UCLA with one another. The platform enables users to buy and sell tickets, as well as find someone to attend a concert with. As design lead, I collaborated closely with the team to understand user needs, focusing on creating an intuitive, user-friendly experience that helps students seamlessly connect, plan, and enjoy events together. My goal was to ensure that AYSE’s design was not only functional but also engaging and easy for users to navigate.

What is AYSE
AYSE is a project from Startup Labs, an in-house pre-accelerator program hosted by UCLA’s Bruin Entrepreneurs. The platform connects UCLA concert-goers, allowing them to buy and sell tickets and find others to attend concerts with. Over an eleven-week period, Startup Labs provides mentorship, resources, and valuable connections to help teams grow, culminating in Demo Day where founders pitch to venture capitalists. The program has successfully launched numerous startups, helping them secure funding and scale their businesses.

What's the Problem?
What's the Problem?
The challenge for concert-goers at UCLA is the difficulty of connecting with others to attend events together or finding a secure and simple way to buy and sell tickets. With busy schedules and varying musical interests, students often miss out on opportunities to attend events with peers or face complications in ticket transactions, making the overall concert experience less enjoyable.
How can we make concert-going at UCLA more accessible and enjoyable by connecting students and simplifying the ticket-buying process?

Time to Hear From Real Users
To gather insights for our user interviews, we took a hands-on approach by flyering around campus and inviting students to fill out a Google Form. To incentivize participation, we handed out Hi-Chew as a thank-you, which suprisingly caught a lot of people’s attention! In the end, we received around 60 responses from a diverse group of students—ranging from those who attend concerts every other weekend to those who haven’t gone to any yet. This broad range of perspectives provided invaluable insights into different user needs and preferences.

Iterating Ideas
In the initial design phase, we made several key changes to better align the app with its purpose and audience. One major shift was transitioning from light mode to dark mode, as it matched the app's sleek, modern vibe and resonated with concert-goers. We also rebranded the app from EventEcho to AYSE (Amplify Your Social Experience), a name that felt more dynamic and reflective of its mission to connect students and enhance their concert experiences. Additionally, we experimented with bold and vibrant colors to strike the perfect balance between energy and cohesion, ensuring the app was visually engaging yet easy to navigate.

Putting Wireframes to the Test
🎨 App Vibe and Aesthetic
Issue: Many users felt that the app’s overall vibe was too bland and didn’t align with the energetic and social atmosphere we wanted it to convey.
Solution: We revamped the visual design by incorporating bold, dynamic colors, updated typography, and playful design elements to reflect the excitement of concerts. Additionally, we transitioned to dark mode to give the app a more modern and vibrant aesthetic that better resonates with users.

🧭 Navigation and Readability
Issue: Users found the app difficult to navigate due to small text and pictures, and the excessive scrolling made it frustrating to find information.
Solution: We condensed content by reorganizing layouts and grouping related information more effectively. Additionally, we increased the font size and optimized image dimensions to improve readability and make navigation more user-friendly.

Let's Reflect
Reflecting on my time with this project, it’s been an incredibly rewarding experience. The team worked almost entirely asynchronously, which made navigating the UI/UX process both challenging and exciting, especially with me leading it. Balancing communication, feedback, and collaboration across different time schedules pushed me to adapt and think more strategically. Despite the challenges, it was amazing to see how everyone’s contributions came together to shape the final product. Leading this process has been a huge growth opportunity, and I’m proud of how we overcame these obstacles as a team.

💬 Revising Our Initial Concept
Initially, we had a concept in mind for how the app would look, but after talking to real potential users, we realized we were off the mark. Their feedback showed us what truly mattered to them, leading us to refine the design and make changes that better aligned with user needs and expectations.

My Amazing Team
This project has been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to work with such an amazing team. It was truly something different from anything I’ve done before, and it pushed me to challenge myself in new ways. The experience has been both rewarding and transformative, and I’m thankful for the chance to grow alongside such talented individuals. This project has taught me so much, and I’ll carry those lessons with me in everything I do moving forward.
Shout out to AYSE's founder (Cathy) for recruiting such a ready to work team, my designers (Elissa, Ria, and Yeon Joo) and of course of developers ( Ben, Kelly, and Meagan) who worked overtime to do both frontend and backend! We couldn't have done it without you guys!
Stay on the lookout for AYSE in the App Store this Spring—exciting things are coming! Also, check out our founder receiving the Pitch Award at the StartUp Labs Business Conference below!
